JAMES WELCH

The Boeing Company

A Day in the Life:

Describing the difference in experiences a worker has in a company that does not subscribe to lean principles and one that does.

Jim grew up in the Pacific Northwest enjoying fishing, hunting, skiing and backpacking with his family. In college, he studied recreation and sports leadership in pursuit of a career as a recreation leader and climbing guide. In 1978 he accomplished one of his dreams by walking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. Jim has also worked as an Alaskan king crab fisherman and in the construction industry as a carpenter, foreman and Project Superintendent, overseeing the construction of custom homes, churches, small commercial projects, apartment complexes and townhome villages.

Jim returned to college to pursue a degree in engineering, eventually receiving a position at the Boeing Company as an Industrial Engineer, during his 28 years at Boeing his responsibilities include Methods Analyst, Program Planner, Configuration Manager and for the last 20 years as a Lean Consultant with postings in the Boeing Commercial Aircraft Lean Enterprise Office, Boeing Satellite Systems, Boeing Defense Systems, Site Services, Supplier Management and Propulsion Systems. He received his lean training from the Shingijutsu Management Consultants and MIT Lean Advancement Institute. He is currently pursuing Lean GOLD certification from the Shingo Institute.

His magnum opus is the relationship he has with his wife and family; he is an avid soccer fan and fly fisherman also enjoying camping, backpacking and helping people with their remodel projects.
